What is Expert OJT?
Expert OJT is an on the job (OJT) instructional system where job experts develop and conduct the training. Expert OJT is
- Training that is done at or near the job site. Done by job experts -- people who actually do the job. A systematic (rather than haphazard), performance-based method.
- Can be done one-on-one or small group.

What are some benefits of Expert OJT?
- A powerful training capability at the work level. Flexible -- update documentation and retrain your people as your products and services change. Control of training in the hands of process owners. Training is done at the job site. Job experts do the training.

What is a job aid?
- A job aid describes HOW to do a task - it gives the "step-by-step." Captures your best practices and puts them in a format that anyone can use. Puts the how-to information in people's HANDS instead of in their HEADS. Are used during training, and, are referred to when actually doing the task. Are written by the job performers or by trainers.
- Are the same as "documentation," "procedures," "job instruction manuals."
Why use job aids?
- Job aids reduce the need for people to do tasks totally from memory. When procedures change often, it is easier to change a job aid than to "unlearn" trainees and teach them the new way. Job aids can reduce training time and costs.
- With job aids, people tend to make fewer errors when doing tasks that are complicated or infrequent.
What industries can use Expert OJT?
Expert OJT can be used in any industry or type of business. Remember, we provide the "template" or system, YOU provide the job experts. Absolutely. In fact, Expert OJT assumes that people are NOT career trainers. Our goal is to enable job experts to quickly and easily communicate their expertise to other people.
Is this compatible with other training methods?
Expert OJT is a performance-based training system. A performance-based system focuses on what we want people to be able to DO. Expert OJT is compatible with any performance-based training system.
How is OJT different from classroom training?
On the job training is usually done in the work environment by a job expert. In most cases, there are one or two trainees. The key differences are the number of trainees taught at a time and the use of media for delivering the information. Keep in mind that effective training methods are the same whether done on the job or in a classroom. For example, any training ought to have objectives, provide feedback, pace the training to trainee's needs, etc.
Who needs OJT?
All organizations depend on skilled people to deliver the goods and services. Over a 30 year career most of the learning occurs on the job. So, OJT is always occurring in every workplace. Someone is always explaining something to another someone. The questions are, is it the right information, is it reproducible, is there any tracking system?
What is the "ideal" training system?
- Training gets on-line fast-- in days instead of weeks. Trainees immediately use what they learned. Training is done at or near the point of goods & services. Training can be updated easily in a matter of days. Job aids and training materials are written by job performers. Uncomplicated training system.
- Process owners own the training.
While no training system is perfect, Expert OJT is engineered to meet the above requirements in an on-the-job training setting.
Will OJT help with ISO certification?
Yes. Expert OJT job aid formats are compatible with ISO requirements. And, the training management and tracking system provide a structure that, with the added details specific to your company, meets ISO requirements.
What is the difference between Job Aids and procedures and documents?
Basically, there is no difference. All are intended to capture the "how to's." If a document: 1) explains how to do something, and 2) can be accessed and used on the job, it is a job aid.
Will you come onsite?
Yes. We often conduct the Expert OJT workshop onsite. The workshop takes two days and can be tailored to your organization's needs.
Can I become certified to teach the Expert OJT Workshop for my company?
Yes. If you will be training more than twelve people to do OJT, becoming certified can be very cost effective. |
